ABOUT

Anvi Prabhu is a London based award winning artiste with a prolific, eclectic, and intuitive practice across the fields of acting/film-making, visual arts, literature/art writing, classical dance, and philosophy.

With a strong technical understanding of each form, she approaches her practice with sensitivity and clarity. This allows her to broaden the scope of developing multidimensional, interdisciplinary creations.

Be it mixed media paintings, insightful writings and poetry films, or dance theater works using the languages of Bharatanatyam, Classical Ballet and theater; her dedication for excellence and innovation shines through.

She has traveled, performed, and showcased her work widely across India, China, Bhutan, USA, and the UK.

VISUAL ARTS

Anvi holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts specialising in Painting (Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Bangalore), and an MA (Chelsea college of Art and Design, London) where her interdisciplinary approach strengthened. She has been a part of several shows including the Grimsby festival (UK); Graceful Arts centre (Alva, USA); and Art cube gallery (London), for which she was also shortlisted for a student award.

She has been the Artist in residence at the London Performance Studios, Tamara confluence (Coorg, India); North Western Oklahoma State University (USA); The Art Students' League of New York (USA) with a merit scholarship; and a performance residency with the International Network of Culture and Arts at Somerset (UK).

ARTIST STATEMENT

My current practice is an ongoing critical research and creation of works that investigate theatricality, performativity within the everyday; and the politics and philosophies that entail the experience of being embodied. I am interested in how personal philosophies clash with societal structures and how these are maneuvered; and how/where people create their safe spaces.
Within this framework, I explore the queer experience, childhood, belonging, reincarnation, memory, amnesia, the limitation of being ‘embodied’, and the desire for being un-embodied.
I am interested in creating neo-myths rooted within the broader dialogues.
How is ‘performance’ defined without the human body? How is it perceived? Can the everyday acts and events of being a human be devoid of political insinuation?

The cross-influences of movement, imagery, and poetic nuances seep into all my works. Though my predominant focus are the ideas/concepts, I am also invested in stretching the technicalities of what is conceived as a particular 'form'.

I hope to achieve the sweet spot between narration, abstraction, and figuration. The human body becomes both the subject and the object.
