GRACELANDS
Mixed media paintings and drawings
2024

‘Gracelands’ is a series of paintings and drawings that looks at de-politicising everyday life.
Carol Hanisch's 1969 essay, "The Personal Is Political" made this into a movement and my desire is to undo it, at least theoretically and artistically for a brief moment.
This over politicization has made everyday acts of survival into statements that could also get you 'cancelled'.

My desire is to see our daily rituals and actions through a spiritual lens rather than just as politics, and to un-encumber the numerous political and social associations that weigh down on us. I hope to showcase bits of life as a poetic, every day, normal occurrences placed in an idealistic, utopian, anarchic  world.

The process for this particluar series involves working with anonymous and found images (both online and otherwise) and objects. I also use images from social media sites, specifically Instagram, and try to mould is as an image that has not been performed for the camera or anyone./anything else.
