VIRGINAL EARTHS
(August 2024 - ongoing)
CONCEPT NOTE -
‘VIRGINAL EARTHS’ looks at the bridges between painting, philosophy, poetry, and performance.
The project uses the (political) philosophies of anarchism and future-primitivism as a lens to explore how our everyday actions have become ritualized and politicized, and how/if they can be freed from political insinuation/associations. Can our seemingly ordinary actions and day-to-day objects become neo myths of the post-truth world?
The project looks at the Eastern philosophies of reincarnation and soul genetics to gain an alternative perspective into the layered histories and psycho geographies of the ‘self’, challenging the notion of our experience of ‘time’ and ‘space’ within a specific ‘body’ to expand into different lifetimes. The human body becomes both the subject and the object.
The research branches out to other interconnected concepts. It asks if the idea of future-primitive is inevitable and if it can still include fragments of technology. It looks at the idea of culture as technology; and the object of fence as a symbol of cultural and social hierarchy through history.
17th century Dutch genre paintings are a great source of inspiration and study on the subject matter of the everyday life.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF CURATION
With this project, I seek to create atmospheric, immersive, theatrical works that enhance the overall experience of art.
I am eager to experiment with alternative and subversive ways of curating art. For example, can reading a text become a performance activation within the exhibition space? Can it become participatory rather than private? Can drawings and other two-dimensional works be displayed as immersive installations/performative pieces, rather than as static pieces on the wall next to each other?
